Spring/Summer ‘22 Hair Trends – The Styling Edition

This S/S ‘22, the perspective of change and elevation in hair, is beginning to happen as they move forward from times of the pandemic and its lack of social activity. A desire to have a fresh take on the usual haircut or colour, a dynamic change or just a bit more polish in hairstyling has become the direction for the year.

Chic, sharp, Bobs, extra long hair length, a Shag Cut / Mullet Hybrid, Braids, natural hair textures, Bantu Knots / Buns messy or clean, have all shown themselves as directions of the trend for this season, as has red hair from Ginger, through to Auburn and Orange with hair colour.

The trend is still very much expressing individuality, applying an amount of polish as we get back to making a bit more effort and getting used to going out and socialising again!

The trends

The Shag / Mullet Hybrid

Choppy and blunt, strictly not feathered or wispy in its outline! This haircut is flattering on many with its face framing layers. It’s adaptable length along with a fringe area, which can be full to curtain or none at all, only adds individuality to how adaptable this cut is.

A forward move on the Shag Cut (Coup Sauvage) and a less harsh Mullet, this cut is being worn by Kaia Gerber and Billy Ellish.

Chic Bob (French / Boy Bob)

As seen in Chanel’s campaign with Vivienne Rohner, Sports Max, Fran Summers and Rachel Zelgar at the Grammys, the chic, very French bob continues to be popular. Helped by being so fresh from jaw to shoulder length. This statement haircut appears to be a tonic for going so long without a sharp, dramatic look.

Loose and heavily weighted from the top with no layers, it can be worn turned under, kicked out at the ends or left natural in its texture, this cut has a new take for this season. Just an amount of polish will show its been loved and look of the moment.

The Pixie ’22

The original Pixie haircut is usually a close head cut, with a length that is similar all over. This cut has been modernised by having a longer, softer outline, that is even more gamine to be more flattering and greater suit many.

Layering and texturing brings much more to this short hair game, adding strong colour can create a very individual look.

Extreme long hair

Showing individuality through extremely long hair could be a happy accident, due to lockdown salon closures and a post overbearing attachment to hair that has gone so long without a haircut, which has now became a look.
Alternatively, hair extensions are having a resurgence to provide exaggerated length for statement hair change this season. Ann Taylor Joy, Kardashian, Hilary Duff, Kaia Gerber at this years Met Gala and Dua Lipa at the 2022 Grammys were some who wore it best.

Prominent on the S/S Catwalks were hair buns both messy, spikey and neat . Bantu Knots were seen at Studio 189, knots woven with fabric and neatly executed at Thom Browne.

Prominent on the Spring / Summer ’22 Catwalks were hair buns that were, messy with texture and thrown up, spikey ends left out and ironed, or neat clean and ballerina like. Some are best recreated in salon and need an extra pair of hands, others looked more casual and thrown up that can be easily recreated at home, which can be a helpful switch when hair is overdue its wash and refresh or a post workout.

Braids

In many guises Braids were ever present on the catwalk for S/S ‘22 as well as in Hollywood. Rope Braids, cornrows, hair braided up, and extra long braids at Proenza Schouler were featured. Favourites are the discreet fine braids and statement braids among straight or natural hair.

Braids have shaken off just being casual and street, they have become more sophisticated and can dress hair up.

Hair embellishment

Hair ribbons at Giambattista Valli elevated more natural hair like the above image. Barrettes added some glamour against slick pulled-back hair at both Tom Ford and Simone Rocha.

Hair bands at Salvatore Ferragamo and hair scarfs at Anna Sui, confirmed hair accessories still have a firm place for some elevation and show off the effort made, even on the most natural of hair.
